The “Legendary” Buzz for Oct 12-18

JUST ANNOUNCED

We’ve just announced that John Mellencamp will be performing at Massey Hall on Wednesday, February 9, 2010. A very special performance by the legend will include an “opening” act in the form of a documentary film by Kurt Markus entitled, It’s About You, chronicling the creation of his latest album, shot over the course of last year’s tour of minor league baseball stadiums with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. The show itself will see Mellencamp perform acoustically, with a small combo, and then finally with a full rock band. Tickets go on sale to FriendsFirst members on Thursday, October 14, and then to the general public on Friday, October 15. Until then, check out Mellencamp, as well as Neil Young, Jeff Tweedy, Willie Nelson, and others in a series of videos on TwentyFourBit from Farm Aid’s 25th anniversary concert.

In other legendary musical-icon-show-announcement-news, the one and only Kenny Rogers will bring his Christmas & Hits Tour to Massey Hall on December 3 performing everything from “White Christmas” and “Let it Snow” to “The Gambler” and “Islands in the Stream”. With 50+ years of music-making and over 105 million albums sold worldwide, Kenny Rogers ranks #8 on R.I.A.A’s list of Top Selling Male Artists of all time! Tickets for this show go on sale to the general public on Saturday (Oct 16) at noon.

PERFORMANCES

Belle & Sebastian (Tuesday): By now, you’re all caught up on Belle & Sebastian’s new album Write About Love, but did you know that the lads and lasses from Scotland could well Write About You? The album drops today and inside the packaging itself is your chance to have Stuart Murdoch pay you a visit in order to write a song about you. All the details are here, but just in case you don’t win, the group pays a visit to Massey Hall tonight.

Sufjan Stevens (Wednesday): Like Belle & Sebastian, singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens’ new album drops today; then, tomorrow you get to witness the music innovator live in person at Massey Hall. The new album just received four stars and was called the Disc of the Week by the Globe and Mail. Robert Everett-Green notes that the album is “delicately made and densely layered,” and we can’t wait to see it live.

The Amazing Kreskin (Wednesday & Thursday): What can we possibly say to express how excited we are to welcome The Amazing Kreskin for two nights this week at Glenn Gould Studio? Seriously impressing audiences for decades now, this mentalist and thought reader is a one of a kind entertainer and a true icon of the stage. Check out this clip of Kreskin on CBC The Hour and listen for him live this Thursday on CBC Q, The New Classical 96.3, JAZZ FM and CP24 Breakfast just to name a few.

Danny Michel & His Band (Friday & Saturday): Danny Michel’s latest album, Sunset Sea, was released in July to critical acclaim (and apparent dismay from multiple critics that he is “criminally overlooked”.) Danny Michel has won two Juno Awards and this summer, he also won the special honour of David Suzuki’s Playlist for the Planet for his tune “Feather, Fur & Fin”. Check him and his band out for one or both of his shows this week at Glenn Gould Studio.

PERFORMANCES

The xx (Wednesday): This one is a hot ticket, friends. In fact, at the top of the month, The xx were honoured with the prestigious Barclaycard Mercury Prize. Now The xx are touring their debut album, for which they won the prize, across North America and it sounds like it will be their last tour for quite some time. Tickets to Wednesday’s show just not enough to satiate your need for all things xx-related? CultureMob recently wrote about the group and their auctioning off of their signature X lightboxes for charity. You can check it out for yourself on eBay.

YOU SHOULD KNOW

If you’ve been following us on Twitter (@soundboardTO), you may have seen the recent tweet about the time change for the Mayoral Arts Debate coming up tomorrow (Wednesday, September 29 – new schedule: Doors open at 5:00 pm and debate itself is from 6:00 to 7:30 pm). All of the leading mayoral candidates will be there and the event is moderated by John Tory. This municipal election is an important one and if you’re an artist, an arts worker, an arts supporter, or a fan of the arts in the T-dot – you’ll want to be well-advised of the candidates’ platform on arts in this city in advance of election day on October 25. Also worth checking out: ArtsVote has a great Councillor Report Card.

ACCOLADES

Just last Monday, the fifth annual Polaris Music Prize Gala took place in Toronto featuring performances by each of the ten shortlisted bands, of course, culminating in a grand jury emerging to crown Karkwa the winners of the 2010 award. You can watch the awards show over on Much Music.

Meanwhile, you may recall us having mentioned here on the Buzz NxEW’s 2nd annual Shadow Polaris Prize – a concurrent awarding process to the Polaris Prize (as the name would indicate) with the winner determined this time by reader vote (but once again decided solely on artistic merit and not on album sales). Congratulations go out to The Wooden Sky for taking home the virtual hardware on this one! The Wooden Sky is currently touring across Canada with Yukon Blonde and performs in Toronto on November 6 at Lee’s Palace.

PERFORMANCES

An Evening With Anthony Bourdain (Wednesday): No-nonsense Bourdain comes to Massey Hall this week in support of his latest book, Medium Raw, descriptively subtitled “A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook.” NOW Magazine recently interviewed the man himself – you can check out the chef-author’s wise responses here and here. VIP tickets are available which include not only premiere seating but an exclusive meet and greet session and lots of other good stuff. Check out the event page for all the details. Still deciding? Here are the Top 10 signs that you’re a Bourdain fanatic.

Lang Lang (Monday): Toronto favourite, Lang Lang, returns to Roy Thomson Hall for a performance with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as they kick off their new season. Lang Lang in performance is quite something to witness – his love of music and performing shines through with complete clarity. Plus, he’s perfectly charming at all times – even when (or perhaps especially when) he performs his encore on an iPad.

JUST ANNOUNCED

TIFF announced its full screenings and events schedule this past week which will include numerous Gala screenings at our very own Roy Thomson Hall. One of the most anticipated events (at least for this blogger) is the premiere of The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, a documentary about the making of the legendary Bruce Springsteen album. It was also announced that the Boss will be in town to celebrate this event and while he’s here will be interviewed at the Bell Lightbox by actor Edward Norton to discuss the film as well as the relationship between his music and American filmmaking.

If the amount of Twitter-chatter the past few weeks is any indication, Toronto fans are no doubt excited about the Sufjan Stevens performance at Massey Hall on Oct 13. To add to the anticipation, he announced via his record label Asthmatic Kitty that he’ll release a new album called The Age of Adz (pronounced odds) on October 12, the day prior.
