Next Tuesday and Wednesday, Valery Gergiev is bringing his Mariinsky Orchestra to Roy Thomson Hall. Gergiev has to be the busiest conductor in all of classical music, and his orchestra is constantly on the go. But home ground for them all is the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. Suzie McNeil first released “Believe” on her debut record, Broken & Beautiful. And that might have been the end of it: an up-and-comer cuts a great single, it gets into the radio rotation for a while, and then we all move on to the next big thing – it’s a cycle that’s repeated countless times a year.
Enter the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Suzie approached Bell, an Olympic sponsor, with a proposal: they would work together to create a song and video download for the Olympics, and use the recording to raise funds to support athletes.
