We’re all pretty excited about Ira Glass, host of This American Life, coming to Massey Hall on Oct 27. This event, titled Reinventing Radio, should prove to be a unique and insightful look into one of the most unique programs in the fields of journalism and storytelling by one of the most engaging personalities in said fields. Sadly, the program recently lost a key contributor, Canadian-born David Rakoff. TAL paid tribute to David this past week by airing some of his most memorable contributions. Have a listen This American Life – David Rakoff (1964-2012) - particularly to the “Who’s Canadian?” segment.

Here is a great read about Bruce Sprinsgsteen in The New Yorker.

If you hadn’t already heard about this, Beck has new music coming and it’s not what you expect!

New (great!) snippet of a Bob Dylan tune from his forthcoming album The Tempest

Grizzly Bear (who perform at Massey Hall on September 26) have been sharing some new tracks from their forthcoming album. Check out “Yet Again” and “Sleeping Ute” for a flavor of the new record.

Watch Norah Jones on CBC Q (performance here) and (interview here)

Jenn Grant (who co-headlines Winter Garden Theatre with Cuff The Duke this November) and Canadian author Craig Davidson spend some time chatting for the CBC Music feature Words & Music.

Animal Collective are streaming their forthcoming album in its entirety complete with videos.

Lastly, we’ll leave you with this sneak peek of the highly anticipated new album from Chilly Gonzales (who performs at Winter Garden Theatre on November 8) Solo Piano II. Have a listen:

JUST ANNOUNCED
Last week we announced two very exciting additions from the Bureau of legendary Canadians to the line-up of our presentations. Leonard Cohen will be honoured at the Glenn Gould Prize Gala Concert on May 14 . Tickets are now available for this exciting event where Mr. Cohen will be present but not perform. Performances will come, however, from the likes of Basia Bulat, Cowboy Junkies, John Prine, Serena Ryder, and others. This promises to be a very special night indeed.

Also very special should be a presentation at Glenn Gould Studio of “Good, Pinsent, & Keelor” – that is Travis Good of The Sadies, Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo, and acclaimed actor Gordon Pinsent. The trio have just released an album, Down and Out in Upalong, and are hitting the Glenn Gould Stage to show off their new stuff. You can read the 4-N album review in NOW (where Sarah Greene reports that “[t]he album is reminiscent of Billy Bragg and Wilco’s Mermaid Avenue, but with strong Canadian flavour.” You can also read about the project in the National Post. While the three will be performing as part of the aforementioned Leonard Cohen tribute, you can see their full length show at the Glenn Gould Studio on June 19.

PERFORMANCES THIS WEEK
Norah Jones (Tuesday): Norah Jones comes to Massey Hall tonight in support of her new album The Fall. A quick visit to Ms. Jones’ website reminds us just how cool this gal is: she has decorated a t-shirt and tote bag for an auction benefiting Haiti relief. The project is pretty smashing and also includes submissions from the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kimya Dawson, and the cast of Parks and Recreation. Joining Norah Jones as special guest is the talented Steven Page, who just performed with Art of Time Ensemble over at Koerner Hall.

PERFORMANCES
Free Noon Hour Concert (Tuesday): You may recall from a posting a few weeks ago that Roy Thomson Hall hosts a series of choir and organ concerts that are delightful, free, and conveniently timed to coordinate with your lunch! Today at noon the second of the series takes place: the Victoria Scholars Men’s Choral Ensemble & the Senior Choir of St. Michael’s Choir School perform in A Christmas Celebration.

CBC’s Great Canadian Song Quest (Tuesday): We’re most excited about the existence of this project, and even more excited about the opportunity to check out some of Canada’s best singer-songwriter talent tonight. Performing songs they’ve specially crafted about Canadian places, your faves and mine will be performing, including Chantal Kreviazuk, Hawksley Workman, Joel Plaskett, and Catherine MacLellan.

Nathaniel Dett Chorale (Wednesday and Saturday): The Nathaniel Dett Chorale performs the seasonal tradition: An Indigo Christmas. Pairing traditional and contemporary holiday music, the Chorale will warm your winter with these very special presentations.

Matthew Good (Friday and Saturday): Mr. Good performs for two nights at Massey Hall. He released a double-disc entitled Live at Massey Hall last year, so we know that he’s a fan of the Hall. This year’s release, Vancouver debuted at #2 on the charts and has been acclaimed as a fitting follow-up to the Matthew Good Band’s 2001 issue, The Audio of Being.

Holiday Presents!

We are thrilled to announce that Norah Jones, Pat Metheny, and Our Lady Peace will be making stops at Massey Hall in the new year!

Norah Jones brings her North American tour to Massey Hall on Tuesday March 23. Tickets go on sale to FriendsFirst members on Thursday December 10 at 10 a.m., and to the general public on Monday December 14 at 12 p.m. With her latest release, The Fall, Norah is pushing her musical boundaries. Teaming up with producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse) and alt-country songwriters Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, Norah has expanded her trademark soft jazz-pop sound. The result is a rich soulful record that has Norah stretching her blues wings. As Spin Magazine wrote, the result is “a hot-blooded soul record from the queen of the even keel.” Norah’s sensual, country-tinged voice is so perfectly suited to the bolder, more mature songwriting – the album is a coming of age of sorts. She’s a woman who, at thirty and after thirty-six million albums sold, is learning to move to her own beat. CONTINUE READING >
