WEB WATCH
At the top of February, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame held the inaugural performance in their new series, If You Could Read My Mind at the George Weston Recital Hall. Gordon Lightfoot (who celebrated 40 years performing at Massey Hall this past fall) and Gord Downie (who, with the Tragically Hip, performed no less than six shows at Massey last May) sat down to play some of their tunes and to talk about the art and challenge of songwriting. One of the other highlights came about halfway through the show when Catherine MacLellan performed two of her songs and a stellar rendition of Mr. Lightfoot’s “I’ll be Alright.” The Globe and Mail reported: “She performed gracefully; with each unfailingly reached note, Taylor Swift’s popularity became more unaccountable.” If you want to check out this new force in songwriting, come see her play at Glenn Gould Studio on March 26. There’s definitely no place like home for holiday music. Home to Toronto are an array of Christmas concerts — some are new, but others, such as Nathaniel Dett Chorale’s “An Indigo Christmas…,” return every year.

As is tradition with this holiday concert, now in its 11th year, the chorale performs at the Glenn Gould Studio.

The 21-member chorale will perform a blend of contemporary and traditional compositions, featuring carols, spirituals and folk songs.

While the concert retains its main “An Indigo Christmas…” concept every year, its theme, repertoire and guest performers are different. For example, in 2008, the concert’s theme was ‘great joy.’

The founder and artistic director of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, founded the chorale in 1998, naming it after acclaimed African-Canadian composer R. Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943). CONTINUE READING >

PERFORMANCES
Free Noon Hour Concert (Tuesday): You may recall from a posting a few weeks ago that Roy Thomson Hall hosts a series of choir and organ concerts that are delightful, free, and conveniently timed to coordinate with your lunch! Today at noon the second of the series takes place: the Victoria Scholars Men’s Choral Ensemble & the Senior Choir of St. Michael’s Choir School perform in A Christmas Celebration.

CBC’s Great Canadian Song Quest (Tuesday): We’re most excited about the existence of this project, and even more excited about the opportunity to check out some of Canada’s best singer-songwriter talent tonight. Performing songs they’ve specially crafted about Canadian places, your faves and mine will be performing, including Chantal Kreviazuk, Hawksley Workman, Joel Plaskett, and Catherine MacLellan.

Nathaniel Dett Chorale (Wednesday and Saturday): The Nathaniel Dett Chorale performs the seasonal tradition: An Indigo Christmas. Pairing traditional and contemporary holiday music, the Chorale will warm your winter with these very special presentations.

Matthew Good (Friday and Saturday): Mr. Good performs for two nights at Massey Hall. He released a double-disc entitled Live at Massey Hall last year, so we know that he’s a fan of the Hall. This year’s release, Vancouver debuted at #2 on the charts and has been acclaimed as a fitting follow-up to the Matthew Good Band’s 2001 issue, The Audio of Being.
