JUST ANNOUNCED

We have been working with Canada’s finest songwriters in rooms ranging from the Glenn Gould Studio all the way up to Massey Hall, and every now and then an artist comes along whose songcraft stops us in our tracks. Doug Paisley‘s music is attracting attention from the world’s most respected critics with the Torontonian’s album Constant Companion ranking as #10 on MOJO’s top 50 albums of 2010. We are thrilled to introduce him to you in a special Massey Hall presentation at The Rivoli on Queen St West on Saturday, June 4, 2011. The Rivoli is a landmark of Toronto’s music scene that has hosted Canadian icons such as Blue Rodeo, Feist, Sarah Harmer, and Ron Sexsmith. You can check him out here or in the above embedded video performing on CBC Radio Q. Let us know what you think in the comment section below! We may have a ticket or two to giveaway for doing so, if you’re in the Toronto area and interested in attending.

PERFORMANCES

James Blunt (Tuesday): After recently releasing his new album, Some Kind of Trouble, James Blunt performs tonight at Massey Hall. Special Guest on the bill is Christina Perri who’s forthcoming album lovestrong. releases on May 10. Don’t think you know Christina Perri? You might – her song ‘Jar of Hearts’ was featured on So You Think You Can Dance last year (which Rolling Stone reminds us was even before she had a record deal). You can check out performance video on the Rolling Stone site from when she was named as part of their Band of the Week.

Michael Kaeshammer (Saturday): Michael Kaeshammer hits the Massey Hall stage on Saturday with Special Guest, Jill Barber. Kaeshammer, who just released his new album Kaeshammer, was featured on Soundboard in a video where he spoke about how excited he was to be performing at Massey Hall – and we’re excited too! Jill Barber also just released her latest recording, Mischievous Moon. You can read all about her thoughts on the album and performing in this recent article from the Vancouver Sun as well, check out her latest Bond inspired music video here.

PERFORMANCES

Raul Midón (Thursday): Raul Midón takes to the Glenn Gould Studio stage later this week with his soulful take on jazz guitar. The show promises some serious talent from Midón – the Memphis Flyer recently called him “ a player who’s not easily pigeonholed in any identifiable genre” and noted that his “nimble tenor and gift for melody earns comparisons to Stevie Wonder, but his guitar playing is seldom if ever compared to other artists because there aren’t any other players like him.” Those are some pretty serious compliments and we think you’ll find them well-deserved. Check out some samples of Midon’s smooth sounds on his myspace page.

An Evening with Joe Bonamassa (Saturday): This week is not one to disappoint fans of guitar geniuses as Saturday brings one Joe Bonamassa to Massey Hall. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review recently featured an article online regarding Bonamassa’s new album, Dust Bowl (released just last week), and his career. The album, Bonamassa’s tenth, is pretty special – the article notes that there are guest appearances from John Hiatt and Vince Gill and recalls that “[l]ast year, he was voted the best overall guitarist and best blues guitarist (for the fourth year in a row) by readers of Guitar Player magazine.”

Storyteller extraordinaire, Sylvia Tyson (check out the video embedded above!) was just featured in the Globe and Mail as she recently released her first novel, Joyner’s Dream. The book “follows a family of musicians and thieves from Southampton, in 1788 England, to present-day Toronto, their stories passing through multiple generations in a common family journal kept by the heirs to Old Nick, their ancestral fiddle.” You can also check out this article on the Juno Songwriters’ Circle specifically over at NOW Magazine.

JUST ANNOUNCED

Just yesterday we announced that Sam Roberts Band is coming to Massey Hall this June. The show is in support of Sam Roberts Bands’ new album Collider which, according to Chartattack, hits stores on May 10. Last week, the National Post featured the album in their “opinionated list of the best culture headed this way” and noted that joining Roberts on the recording are “members of introspective art-rockers Califone, Afrobeat revivers Antibalas and jazz-influenced indie band Land of Talk.” The guys keeps good company. The Buzz: April 27 – May 3

PERFORMANCES

Mark Knopfler
(Thursday): On the eve of releasing his latest album (and fifth this decade), Knopfler performs at Massey Hall this Thursday. In fact, it should be mentioned that those who choose to purchase their tickets online, should do so in even numbers only – for every pair of tickets purchased online, purchasers will receive one free copy of the album, Get Lucky. Knopfler has had a most comprehensive career – he was the band leader of the Dire Straits (check out this video of Knopfler performing one of my faves, The Ballad of Romeo and Juliet, in London, wrote the score for such films as the classic Princess Bride, and, according to the Rolling Stone is the 27th best guitarist of all time. **JUST ANNOUNCED**

C. R. Avery is coming to Glenn Gould Studio on Thursday, February 25. This guy is something else: his bio calls him a “one man hip hop beatbox blues harmonica americana iconoclast,” and when Tom Waits gave C.R. a listen he said “blowin’ my mind.” Avery impressed this year at the Hillside Festival in Guelph and a new album, The Great Canadian Novel, is due out in 2010.
