Great Canadian Song Quest

JUST ANNOUNCED

For some, it was a scary Halloween weekend indeed – there was snow here in the t-dot, so much so that it took the twitterverse by storm (pun entirely intended, I couldn’t help myself) if only for a few moments. But winter is not so bad – here are two great examples of what to look forward to in the coming (cold) months.

“Comedy’s Lovable Queen of Mean,” Lisa Lampanelli will be taking the Massey Hall stage in January. Just last month, comic Lampanelli wed Jimmy Cannizzaro at the Friars Club – The New York Times had exclusive rights to the wedding story which you can read about here.

February brings with it an appearance at Massey Hall from Heart. The unfaltering sister-duo of Ann and Nancy Wilson have been performing as Heart, with great success, since the 1970s. They’ve recently released Red Velvet Car which shot to #10 on the Billboard Album Charts the week it was released and has received critical acclaim from Rolling Stone Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. With 22 top 40 hits and over 30 million albums sold since 1976’s Dreamboat Annie – this will be a concert not to be missed.

Tickets for both shows go on sale for FriendsFirst members tomorrow, Wednesday, November 3, and for the general public this Friday, November 5.

PERFORMANCES

Measha Brueggergosman (Wednesday): First thing’s first – hear what Roy Thomson Hall means to Measha Brueggergosman right from the source in this video log posted on Soundboard last week. Brueggergosman performs the songs from her Night and Dreams recording, live in recital alongside accompanist Justus Zeyen.

Conversations with Penn & Teller (Wednesday): This event promises to be pretty special – after all, it’s got “conversations” right in the title and Teller is usually a little on the quiet side (as in, he very rarely speaks in performance). Check out this Toronto Star article to learn about Penn’s “most-hated tricks of all time” and then for your Teller fix, read this Vanity Fair piece written by Teller himself about the importance of Houdini, “the Great Self-Liberator.”

Billy Connolly (Thursday, Friday, & Saturday): Billy Connolly triumphantly returns to Massey Hall for a trio of performances this week. Check out the CONTINUE READING >

Blue Rodeo

PERFORMANCES
Blue Rodeo (Tuesday – Thursday) – These Canadian legends take over Massey Hall for three straight nights. The band just released their twelfth studio album The Things We Left Behind, last November and there’s still no stopping them. Check out their latest video for Arizona Dust here.

Masters of Persian Music-Three Generations (Friday) – Our friend Alan Davis wrote about the Masters of Persian Music here on Soundboard last week and perfectly described the brilliant and beautiful music from the traditions of Iran that you’ll have a chance to hear at Roy Thomson Hall this Friday. This concert, is sure to please both established fans and those new to the genre featuring the inspirational tar maestro Hossein Alizadeh, the kamancheh virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor, and the remarkable young vocalist Hamid Reza.

The Bad Plus (Saturday) – The Bad Plus are back in town after performing a sold out show at Glenn Gould Studio back in June 2008. Saturday night at the Gould features not one, but two shows from this fantastic trio, who will be performing a mix of original material and unconventional interpretations of existing music from both the Classical and contemporary worlds. Treasure Hunt

songquest2Were you listening to CBC Radio 2 yesterday afternoon?

No?

Why ever not?

The Great Canadian Song Quest debuted at 3:30 p.m. on the afternoon show Drive, introducing a new set of Canada-themed songs into our collective musical landscape. The concept is this: Radio 2 listeners were invited to select, through a nomination and voting process, some of their favourite places throughout Canada, and some singer-songwriters to create timeless classics about those places. One locale – sometimes as specific as the Black Sheep Inn (Wakefield, Quebec) and sometimes as broad and large as Algonquin Park (Ontario) – was selected from each of the provinces and territories, and matched with one of the nominated artists, who was asked to write, record, and perform a soon to be epic tune about it. Catherine MacLellan will be contemplating Canadian greatness for the CBC's Great Canadian Song Quest

Catherine MacLellan will be contemplating Canadian greatness for the CBC's Great Canadian Song Quest

November brings with it rains and winds that will no doubt chill us to the bone as we refuse to don our winter coats for just a few more weeks. Conversely, at the halls November brings some artists that will warm your heart and soul.

Swell Season, appearing tonight at Massey Hall, is like a hot cup of cocoa – a delicious treat you might take in while sitting around the fireplace. The duo’s latest album, Strict Joy, came out just last week and already critics are singing its praises: SPIN magazine gave it four stars and called it “a glorious bummer.” (If you’re not yet acquainted with the mythology surrounding this band, here’s your crash course.) And if you can’t make it out to the show this evening, we have a consolation prize – you can stream the album in its entirety right here. CONTINUE READING >
