PERFORMANCES
Gabriela Montero (Friday): Gabriela Montero takes to the Glenn Gould Studio stage on Friday for what we’re sure will be a triumphant return. Last time through Toronto, John Terauds (Toronto Star) declared “Recitals are rarely so thrilling.” High praise indeed. Part of the show will showcase Ms. Montero’s signature improvisation where the pianist takes suggestions from the audience (fair warning: if you make such a suggestion, you may be asked to sing a few bars for reference) and then off she will go into a striking variation on a theme.
JUST ANNOUNCED
‘Twas a good week in the land of show announcements. Just announced yesterday were upcoming shows from both Jackson Browne and the Pixies. The Pixies perform at Massey Hall on April 18 as part of their Doolittle Tour, performing all the songs from Doolittle as well as its “related B-sides.” Check out the event page on our website for details about how the medium of film will play a particularly key role in this concert experience.
Jackson Browne is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and he was nominated for Grammy Awards for his live albums Solo Acoustic Volume 1 (2005) and Solo Acoustic Volume 2 (2008). If that’s not enough, he also received two Humanitarian awards and the John Steinbeck award. You can read all about this artist’s substantial history and achievements on his website and then see the real deal on April 5 in An Evening with Jackson Browne.
For both of these concerts, tickets go on sale to FriendsFirst members on Wednesday and to the general public on Friday.

In the lower level of Massey Hall you’ll find ‘Centuries,’ a fully-stocked bar you can visit pre-show and at intermission of most performances. The room is filled with artefacts illustrating the admirable history of Massey Hall, perhaps most notably the “Decade Panels” that line the entrance corridor to ‘Centuries.’ Starting with 1894-1904, a panel is present for each decade since Massey Hall opened. The panels feature news articles, photographs, programmes and other paraphernalia that aim to give a slice of life at Massey Hall from that period in history. In this column, we look at each decade and highlight some of the items included in these panels. Of course, for a more in-depth look, next time you’re at Massey for a show, head on over to ‘Centuries’ and check them out. This week, we take a look at 1954 – 1963, the seventh in a series of eleven tributes to Massey Hall’s glorious history.
