Diana Ross

If you attended Monday night’s concert at Roy Thomson Hall, no doubt you’ll remember seeing Maurie Sherman & Matthew Almeida. The pair were randomly selected to join Diana Ross on stage. We caught up with them and asked if they’d tell us about the experience and share those camera-phone pics they were taking.

Here it is, in their own words…

Taking our Roy Thomson Hall concert virginity away was none other then Diana Ross!  She is undoubtedly one of the Motown greats and to see her right here in Toronto was amazing!  I love her countless smash hits to begin with, but adding a full orchestra to her concert experience was incredible!  Both Matthew and I went to the concert not really knowing what was in store, but we were absolutely blown away by the experience.  Our seats were great!!  And it didn’t take long before we were on our feet, caught up in the infectious beats and her classic hits.

One thing that makes Diana stand out among other artists I’ve seen in concert is the fact that she makes eye contact with you as you dance!  She smiles at you – it really makes you feel like you’re part of the show.  In fact, between two songs, she said “While you’re staring at me, I’m staring back at you… I see ALL your beautiful smiles!“  I have to say though, that one of the highlights for me, was halfway through the show Diana kicked off a back-to-back set of upbeat favorites starting with “I’m Coming Out”.  I don’t think I’ve danced like that in a long time.

During her set, there was no doubt that Diana saw us, as she stood in front of Matthew and I and smiled.

I thought there was no way it could get cooler; she then pointed at us and signaled us to come on stage!  WHAT!?  REALLY?!   So, not missing a beat we climbed up on stage and shook what our mama’s gave us!

I couldn’t believe it, we were actually on stage with Diana Ross!  She was laughing and had a great time with us.  It was unbelievable!  She gave us a hug and we went back to our seats.  It’s a moment we will never forget.

Thanks Diana, you’re so awesome! and thanks to Roy Thomson Hall  for being the perfect venue to see this live act.

PERFORMANCES

George Thorogood at Massey Hall in 2008 - photo credit: Jack O'Diamonds

George Thorogood & The Destroyers (Friday): George Thorogood and his band have been performing for over thirty years and just last summer released yet another album, The Dirty Dozen. Have you always wanted to be “Bad to the Bone” like Mr. Thorogood? Now’s your chance! Over at Guitar World you can take in a guitar lesson from the legend himself on how to play “Bad to the Bone,” and more. And of course, if you’re not looking to become a member of The Destroyers and just want to take in some solid blues-rock tunes, join us at Massey Hall this Friday.

Eddie Izzard (Sunday & Monday): Eddie Izzard returns to Massey Hall for two more performances of unadulterated hilarity. For a fast-paced taste of what you’re in for, visit his website for a few video clips of his signature stand-up.

Diana Ross (Monday): As you well know Diana Ross is an institution and we are simply ecstatic that she’ll be gracing the stage of Roy Thomson Hall this Monday for a performance complete with a live string and horn section. Around here, the anticipation is brewing as we imagine what it will be like to see classic hits like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “I’m Coming Out” performed live by the legendary Ross. In preparation for the big event, we recommend you check out this recent exclusive interview on Entertainment Tonight on the eve of this, her More Today Than Yesterday tour.

NorahJones

PERFORMANCES THIS WEEK
Norah Jones (Tuesday): Norah Jones comes to Massey Hall tonight in support of her new album The Fall. A quick visit to Ms. Jones’ website reminds us just how cool this gal is: she has decorated a t-shirt and tote bag for an auction benefiting Haiti relief. The project is pretty smashing and also includes submissions from the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kimya Dawson, and the cast of Parks and Recreation. Joining Norah Jones as special guest is the talented Steven Page, who just performed with Art of Time Ensemble over at Koerner Hall.

FREE CONCERT ALERT! Elora Festival Singers (Thursday): I’ve said it before (last week in fact, here on The Buzz) and I’ll say it again, Free Noon Hour concerts at Roy Thomson Hall are a great opportunity to take a break from the grind. Thursday brings us one of Canada’s finest professional chamber choirs, so come to the Hall and see for yourself. CONTINUE READING >
