The Holiday Buzz: Dec. 21-Jan. 10

The Buzz is taking a wee holiday break next week but will be back on January 10. This week we’ve included our New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day festivities and made provisions for your stocking up on festive cheer in music form. And if we may suggest an idea for those of you still on the hunt for the perfect gift – consider the gift of live music. By sharing or providing an experience to enjoy live music, you’re creating long-lasting memories. From all of us at Soundboard, Happy Holidays!

PERFORMANCES

Bravissimo! (December 31 at Roy Thomson Hall): Enjoy Opera’s Greatest Hits this New Year’s Eve at Roy Thomson Hall with an international cast of brilliantly talented performers including Canada’s own Isabel Bayrakdarian and Richard Margison.

New Year’s Eve Comedy Extravaganza (December 31 at Massey Hall): Last week, we let you know the full line-up for this hilarious night of comedy and it’s a gathering of great comedic minds. Hosted by Geri Hall and starring Jon Dore, the night begins at 7:30pm which means that you can laugh yourself silly and still make it to your venue of choice to ring in the New Year at midnight.

Salute to Vienna (January 1 at Roy Thomson Hall): Now in its 16th year, the annual Salute to Vienna concert is a North American tradition inspired by the annual concert celebration on New Year’s Day in Vienna. Read all about the history of the tradition here and the performers here (including Orchestra, soloists, and dancers from the Ballet St. Polten).

JUST ANNOUNCED

It’s an exciting week! Yesterday, we announced that Rufus Wainwright will be performing at Massey Hall on December 4, 2010 . The man has been called “the greatest songwriter on the planet” – high praise, especially when it’s coming from one Elton John. Tickets go on sale to our FriendsFirst members tomorrow, Wednesday, and to the general public on Friday.

Also yesterday, tickets went on sale for Bellydance Superstars’ performance of their latest, Bombay Bellywood, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Monday, November 29. The Bellydance Superstars pride themselves on continually evolving the art of bellydance – with this event, they fuse cultural elements from India with their signature bellydance brilliance for a true dance extravaganza.

PERFORMANCES

Chick Corea Trio (Tonight – Tuesday): We’re very excited to welcome Chick Corea back to the Massey Hall stage – this time with Christian McBride and Brian Blade. If you haven’t already, check out the video on the event page (just click “Video” underneath the photo) of Corea and McBride talking about the new trio, then pick up your ticket for what promises to be a great show this evening.

Toronto Children’s Chorus – Noon Hour Concert (Thursday) FREE!: It’s that time of year again! As we mentioned in a Soundboard post last fall (In Which We Encourage You To Play Hooky,) Roy Thomson Hall has been hosting free Noon Hour Concerts since 1996. Thursday marks the first concert of this series in the 2010-11 season and features the Toronto Children’s Chorus, one of the world’s leading choral ensembles for children, conducted by Elise Bradley, and Christopher Dawes on organ. Join us and enjoy an hour of beautiful choir and organ music at beautiful Roy Thomson Hall. If you aren’t able to stop in this Thursday, the TCC return to Roy Thomson Hall for their annual Christmas concert on Saturday, December 18.

PERFORMANCES

Chilly Gonzales Piano Talk Show (Tuesday): Any Chilly Gonzales show is bound to be something really quite special and tonight’s is no different. We’re particularly excited because today is the day Chilly’s new album Ivory Tower is released AND this particular event will also see singer-songwriter-producer extraordinaire Howie Beck join Gonzales on stage. Gonzales’ music is entirely likely to make you bop (“I AM EUROPE” or “Working together”) or chuckle (“Never Stop Rap,”) then in an instant have you thinking about what it is to be an artist (“overnight.”) Check out his myspace here and all the deets on the film he produced and stars in here. And if you didn’t see it the first time, here are just some of the reasons Why We Like Chilly Gonzales.

TIFF (Thursday to Next Saturday) – TIFF took over Toronto last week and that’s just fine with us! As you may recall from our coverage of “the festival of festivals” last fall, Roy Thomson Hall is a serious focal point of the fest. The opening of the Bell Lightbox is pretty exciting stuff but that doesn’t mean that the gala festivities here at Roy Thomson Hall get any less exciting. Starting with last week’s opening night screening of Score: A Hockey Musical (which we’ve been following since February when it was shooting here in Toronto) the Hall is filled with all sorts of ritz and glitz until the closing night at Roy Thomson Hall this Saturday, September 18. You can check out the schedule for all the films and all things TIFF over on the official website.

The LA Times recently featured an article about Jac Holzman (founder of Elektra Records). The article includes a video clip of Holzman discussing Bob Dylan going electric at the Newport Folk Festival and the importance of letting musicians evolve, on their own terms. Dylan, you may recall from our Decade Panels played Massey Hall later that year and similar to his experience at Newport, his electric set at the grand ol’ lady of Shuter Street was also not met with a warm welcome, instead receiving “jeers.”

PERFORMANCES

Peter Frampton (Thursday): Frampton’s career properly took off in 1976 with his epic album Frampton Comes Alive! which features the songs we now know, love, and call classic – “Show Me the Way,” “Baby, I Love Your Way,” and “Do You Feel Like We Do” – and was the best selling album of all time (to that point). True Story: Peter Frampton began his musical journey with a Banjolele – a “banjo-shaped ukulele.” I wish I could say I made up this word but it’s totally legit – it’s pretty much the best word mash-up since liger. Also very cool: you can make your very own banjolele. While I would be surprised if Frampton cracks out ye olde banjolele on Thursday, I am certain that he will bring the awesome sounds that have made him the legend he is (legendary enough, in fact, to have appeared on both The Simpsons and Family Guy).

While it may seem like early days yet for the flurry of TIFF-related blog posts here on Soundboard, the delightful tidbits have started to drop from the TIFF office including this one: Score: A Hockey Musical will be the Opening Night Gala here at Roy Thomson Hall on September 9. You may recall us mentioning the film back in February when it was still in production. Cameos from musical artists include Hawksley Workman, John McDermott, and Nelly Furtado.
