In this week’s Listening Booth we feature Joseph Calleja, who for the better part of this decade has been heralded as one of the great operatic voices of his generation. The Maltese tenor has been compared to the likes of Domingo and Pavarotti as frequently as his return invitations to New York’s Metropolitan Opera! This past season his portrayal in the title role of Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffman was seen worldwide as part of the Met’s Live in HD movie broadcasts. Next season he returns to The Met in three different roles (Rodolfo in La Bohème, the Duke of Mantua in Verdi’s Rigoletto and Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor) – but not before his Canadian recital debut at the end of this month (May 28 at Roy Thomson Hall) which we are very much looking forward to.
