The Buzz: Aug 31 – Sept 6

JUST ANNOUNCED

TIFF announced its full screenings and events schedule this past week which will include numerous Gala screenings at our very own Roy Thomson Hall. One of the most anticipated events (at least for this blogger) is the premiere of The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, a documentary about the making of the legendary Bruce Springsteen album. It was also announced that the Boss will be in town to celebrate this event and while he’s here will be interviewed at the Bell Lightbox by actor Edward Norton to discuss the film as well as the relationship between his music and American filmmaking.

If the amount of Twitter-chatter the past few weeks is any indication, Toronto fans are no doubt excited about the Sufjan Stevens performance at Massey Hall on Oct 13. To add to the anticipation, he announced via his record label Asthmatic Kitty that he’ll release a new album called The Age of Adz (pronounced odds) on October 12, the day prior.

WEB WATCH

If you have already sent your image to the “Face in Space Project,” you’ll certainly be interested in the “Wakeup Song Contest.” Traditionally, the songs that wake up the astronauts aboard NASA’s Space Shuttle missions are selected by friends and family of the crew. For the final two space missions however, NASA is inviting the public to help choose and even submit your own original recording!

And speaking of “Wake Up” – Soundboard favourites, Arcade Fire, has shared their latest music video in the form of a short film by Chris Milk, titled “The Wilderness Downtown.” An “interactive interpretation” of the track “We Used To Wait” from their latest album, The Suburbs. Using HTML5 video, audio and canvas, this “Chrome Experiment” features interactive flocking birds, custom rendered Google street maps, 3D canvas rendering and is a truly moving example of the possibilities of how we might consume and interact with music in the not so distant future.
