Blue Rodeo

PERFORMANCES
Blue Rodeo (Tuesday – Thursday) – These Canadian legends take over Massey Hall for three straight nights. The band just released their twelfth studio album The Things We Left Behind, last November and there’s still no stopping them. Check out their latest video for Arizona Dust here.

Masters of Persian Music-Three Generations (Friday) – Our friend Alan Davis wrote about the Masters of Persian Music here on Soundboard last week and perfectly described the brilliant and beautiful music from the traditions of Iran that you’ll have a chance to hear at Roy Thomson Hall this Friday. This concert, is sure to please both established fans and those new to the genre featuring the inspirational tar maestro Hossein Alizadeh, the kamancheh virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor, and the remarkable young vocalist Hamid Reza.

The Bad Plus (Saturday) – The Bad Plus are back in town after performing a sold out show at Glenn Gould Studio back in June 2008. Saturday night at the Gould features not one, but two shows from this fantastic trio, who will be performing a mix of original material and unconventional interpretations of existing music from both the Classical and contemporary worlds.

Kevin Smith (Saturday) – Kevin Smith returns to Toronto with an appearance at Roy Thomson Hall on Saturday. This acclaimed director, author, and actor will present another epic and candid Q&A for your watching and listening pleasure.

Band of the Irish Guards and the Pipes, Drums, and the Dancers of the Royal Regiment of Scotland (Sunday) – Featuring the music of Ireland and Scotland, this concert will be lively and is certain to be filled with both pomp and circumstance! Check this out

ACCOLADES
While Beyonce and Taylor Swift were the obvious big winners at the Grammy Awards this weekend, we’re also rather excited to see that the Best Opera Recording award went to Britten: Billy Budd which features Nathan Gunn as a principal soloist (the award goes to the Conductor, Album Producer(s), and the Principal Soloists). Nathan Gunn performs as part of our International Vocal Recital Series on March 10.

AUDIOFILE
You may recall that we were avidly following the Great Canadian Song Quest on CBC Radio 2. The songs, written for every province and territory, composed and performed by an artist from that province or territory, are now available as an album on iTunes. Perhaps even more exciting is that the live concert from Glenn Gould Studio is now available for your listening pleasure over at CBC Concerts on Demand.

Stefania Paterak is the Programming Coordinator for Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall.
