Michael Kaeshammer performs at Glenn Gould Studio last year.
Just for fun, we’re trying something a little different with the Buzz this week: you’ll still get a weekly dose of all the good stuff, just packaged in a shiny new format. We’ve got show highlights and announcements, and we’ll also let you know about awards, news items, and other inside scoop details about the artists and presentations at the Halls. Let us know what you think!
**JUST ANNOUNCED**
C. R. Avery is coming to Glenn Gould Studio on Thursday, February 25. This guy is something else: his bio calls him a “one man hip hop beatbox blues harmonica americana iconoclast,” and when Tom Waits gave C.R. a listen he said “blowin’ my mind.” Avery impressed this year at the Hillside Festival in Guelph and a new album, The Great Canadian Novel, is due out in 2010.
The boys are back in town – the Trailer Park Boys that is! After an outrageous performance of their Community Service Variety Show last winter, these unruly funny-men return to Massey Hall on March 10, 2010 with what promises to be outrageous politically incorrectness and a charm you’ll try -- and utterly fail -- to deny.
And, as if that’s not enough, we’ve just announced a second performance by the ever-so-lovely Emilie-Claire Barlow. Her newest album, Haven’t We Met, came out last March and cracked jazz charts all over the world just before she performed to a sold out show at Glenn Gould Studio. This year we’re delighted to have her for two consecutive nights, on April 15 and 16.
**ACCOLADES**
Michael Kaeshammer was recently nominated for a whopping three Smooth Jazz Awards: Male Vocalist of the Year, Keyboardist/Pianist of the Year, and Best Original Composition, for “Isabelle.” You can (and should!) head on down to the beautiful Koerner Hall on Saturday night for an intimate evening with the man and his stellar band, and see what all the fuss is about for yourself.
**PERFORMANCES**
Gordon Lightfoot -- Wednesday & Saturday: It is Gordon Lightfoot week here at Massey Hall and you know we’re excited. This year Lightfoot celebrates no less than forty years of epic performances at Massey and we were so excited by this incredible feat that we put Mr. Lightfoot on the cover of our season brochure.
Michael Ondaatje & Bruce Cockburn -- Saturday: Esteemed Canadian author Michael Ondaatje and musical mastermind Bruce Cockburn (who, incidentally, graced the cover of our brochure just a few years ago) will share the stage at Glenn Gould Studio for an genre-bending collaboration. It promises to be an exciting evening of literature and song from these creative minds.
Jamie Oliver -- Sunday: Jamie Oliver comes to Roy Thomson Hall in the afternoon, to talk about his latest movement and to introduce his book of the same name: Jamie’s Food Revolution. Word on the street is that Jamie is super-excited to speak to Torontonians about this initiative – he recently answered some of your questions in a Globe and Mail interview, in fact. And might I add, that if you buy a ticket to the show you get a free (you read right – free!) copy of the new book. How very delicious.
Stefania Paterak is the Programming Coordinator for Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall.
