Boy meets girl; boy gets girl; boy loses girl; boy writes tragic love songs. Boy meets new girl; boy and girl make beautiful music together. And so the plot unfolds.
This modern, urban play on a classic tale isn’t just a nice story – it actually happened. The boy and girl in question are Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová , the members of the band Swell Season. The musicians-turned-actors were at the heart of the 2007 movie Once, and went on to take home an Academy Award for the single “Falling Slowly” from that movie’s soundtrack, along with a Grammy and a pile of critical acclaim.
With the launch of their latest album, Strict Joy, the duo have embarked on another extensive global trek, one which will bring them to Massey Hall on November 3. The couple’s chemistry onstage is unmistakable. While their romantic partnership has dissolved (this last release was recorded in the wake of the couple’s break-up), their ability to make beautiful music together remains. Like the best ex-lovers who work to retain a friendship, the duo are exploring new post-breakup territory, and we are fortunate enough to be able to listen along with them as they do.
